Match Report 2005

Date: 16/06/2005, 2pm (Norton Playing Fields)

James 'Goose' Gosling reports:

It's a measure of the success of the old boys concept - and the work put into organising it- that 38 old boys and girls attended the 2005 event on April 16.

It's another measure of its success that, for the first time, a report of the game, complete with colour picture, made the pages of Rugby Leaguer and League Express - the game's best selling weekly newspaper.

On the field, the current team may have failed to win either Varsity or their league this year but many of them marked their final appearances by taking the old boy spoils for the first time in three years, defeating the returnees 34-28.

Among those making their last appearances were Adam Smart, Dan Friend, Dave Jones, Tom Shiels and several others who have played for two years or more and contributed massively to the club.

In a fast and frenetic encounter, former Warrington Academy player Ged Moore was outstanding for the 'home' side, making massive yardage each time. Half back Ed Garrow also shone, reflecting his rah-rah background as he pushed the old boys back with long kicks.

Centre Keiran Shanahan also marked his farewell with strong defence and an 80 metre try as he romped past the aged oppposition.

For the old boys, hooker Jim Todd marshalled his troops well, crossing for James Lowes-esque try, full back Iain Pearson again proved his worth under a high ball, while prop Duncan Potts steamed into the youngsters with some agressive runs and defence that occasionally bordered on illegality.

However, an injudicious use of substitutes by captain Todd saw forwards Andy Gwilliam and Rob Cook kicking their heels for much of the match - a mistake as the old boys fowards tired in face of younger opposition.

As the game wore on, a game plan based on high completion rates and regular rotations of the forwards saw the current team home with something to spare, despite a late fightback by the old boys.

Afterwards rivalries were forgotten as both sides got together for a meal and Pop Tarts. In some respects the game came a clear second to the overall day, which now seems to grow year on year.
